Our Religious Education Curriculum
Our curriculum is shaped by our school mission and values. We ensure that a minimum of 10% of curriculum time is allocated for RE teaching across all key stages. We are currently in a transitional period where we are moving towards a new scheme for the teaching of RE called 'The Vine and Branches'. We have been directed to follow this scheme by the diocese.
In EYFS and Year 5/6, our Religion Curriculum is based on the RE Curriculum Directory, supported by ‘The Way The Truth and The Life.’ The children in EYFS, Year 5 and Year 6 have been introduced to the 'ways of knowing' from the new RE Directory, but continue to follow 'The Way, the Truth and The Life' scheme as advised by the diocese.
This academic year, the children in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be taught using The Vine and the Branches. The Vine and The Branches is a new resource from the Teachers’ Enterprise in Religious Education. It helps teachers deliver the requirements of the 2023 edition of the Religious Education Directory. It is written in pupil friendly language with clear indications for the teacher to show where the Knowledge Lens content and Ways of Knowing are being covered.
The programme is divided into six Branches.
1.Creation and Covenant
2.Prophecy and Promise
3.Galilee to Jerusalem
4.Desert to Garden
5.To the Ends of the Earth
6.Dialogue and Encounter
For each of the six branches, there are five or six units. Each unit begins with Scripture and the whole scheme is based around listening to and becoming familiar with the Word of God. During RE lessons, pupils are given the chance to consider discern questions. The children also enjoy the creative elements of RE lessons.
